We all have to leave the room where the christmas tree is standing (we are celebrating christmas at the evening of the 24th in germany), my father will light the candles (yes, only real one ^^) and then we are allowed to come in. Being grown up this still is a magical moment for me, the smell of the tree and of the bee wax candles, the soft light reflecting at the christmas ornaments and presents under the tree... 157. One of my favourite New Year traditions (and we like NY more than Christmas here in Russia) is preparing an enourmous bowl of the salad associated only with New Year in our country. Inside Russia it is called 'Olivier', but anywhere outside Russia it's called 'Russian salad'. All the jokes about the New Year always include allusions to the Olivier salad, such as jokes about people sleeping with their faces in Olivier. I know it doesn't sound funny, as often happens with internal national jokes :-)
