Sorry I missed posting last week with my latest Giveaway but the flu bug had other plans for me! I started feeling "poorly" on Tuesday evening and by Wednesday morning I decided staying in bed was the answer. Didn't start to feel human until Saturday, thus no post!
Anyway, last week I uncovered a
jellyroll quilt race quilt that I had made sometime in the past! I had some jellyrolls that I got at Tuesday Morning. Since they were blue and green strips, I could not pass them by because those are my favorite colors!!! BUT I also knew that I would never quilt it...please don't ask why I made it other than the challenge of the jellyroll race!! I had even put sashing on the quilt...don't know what I was thinking. OK, now what can I do with a quilt top that I know I will never finish? Cut it up and use it for other things. First thing up was a couple of totes. Just simple totes for the grocery store or the library.
|
I used some of the sashing for the handles |
|
I lined it with navy blue and added a key fob |
|
Second tote with polka dots for the handles and lining. |
|
|
Ok, if I have totes, I will need some cute little clutches!
|
This is made from the two sashings. I do love navy and lime! |
|
Just a plain navy lining. |
|
Another tote with a cute little zipper pull. If you need some split rings check out Home Depot! I found them in the key section. 1 inch rings packaged in 2's for $1 per pkg!!!! |
|
Still another clutch |
|
I used the navy polka dotter fabric |
As you can see, every clutch and tote is different because of the layout of the jellyroll race quilt. I was going to make several other projects but the nasty flu decided differently. I have plans for some placemats and maybe a bathmat like
Crazy Mom Quilts made. Who knows what else I will come up with...I have a lot of quilt left to cut up!
Now for the
GIVEAWAY! I have filled a 8"X8"X4" box and you wouldn't believe what you can stuff in a box that size! There is a fat quarter bundle of some really pretty flannel, a Moda charm pack, a mini charm pack, a pack of Universal needles, a roll of heat and bond, a set of three 45 mm rotary blades, a partial Moda jelly roll, 2 spools of Gutermann thread, a package of thin leather strips to use for zipper pulls and a cute little round storage box. Who knows, I might add something else..there is a little room left! All you need to do to win is leave a comment telling me how you made lemonade from some "lemon" project of yours.
Please be sure to leave your email address in your post so I will be able to get in touch with you if you win! The Giveaway will end at midnight July 14th. Good Luck to all!
I used the Steeler football team (which I do not like) scraps from a baby quilt I made into a sweet angel wall hanging for a lady at our church who is a die hard fan. She loved it and it got that dreaded fabric out of my house!
ReplyDeleteI love the second tote bag the best. You did such a good job on those.

I'm new to quilting so I don't have a lot of lemons, but I bought this same set of fabrics and made a wrapped clothesline bowl. Turned out beautiful. grinnie1961@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThanks for the awesome giveaway. I made a bunch of string pieced units to go in a scrappy string "X" block quilt, but I didn't like the blocks after I put them together. So I took them back apart and combined them with some more UFO blocks and made a beautiful scrappy quilt that I love.
ReplyDeleteI am new to quilting so I have some lemons, but haven't figured out the lemonade yet. You projects are great options! mjalto@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI randomly sliced clunky blocks and sewed them into new blocks for a wall hanging. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteLove your ideas!! I use practice quilt blocks to make pouches. If the block is small, I have to add borders, but I have some really cute pouches that would have just been thrown in a stack to use, never!!
ReplyDeleteI made a quilt top and didn't like it, so I cut up the blocks and used the blocks to make mug rugs. I use these to practice my machine quilting. Matsche.christine@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteMy lemons are fabrics from Ikea with big prints which just are not me. I use those to make small wallets for my sons to give to friends who just want money for their birthdays. Big print, small wallet = totally different result
ReplyDeleteI have a bag of blocks that I have made and I am turning them into bags and pillows
ReplyDeleteI have made blocks that I just don't like and have turned them into potholders.
ReplyDeletei use every scrap on quilts, some way are another they end up being scrap quilts
ReplyDeleteI have used 4 patch blocks that were trimmed too small and made them into a cushion cover to match the original project. Thanks for the chance to win.

Started a scrap vortex, my 2nd, but since I got distracted it has become "made" fabric for several little zipper pouches!

Cute a bunch of blocks a bit too small...had to add some more fabric to the ends and with the quilting can not even tell.
ReplyDeleteOpps! forgot to say love the bags and leave email.

I have made a quilt top and did not like it - so I used it like yards of fabric for other projects! made some cute bags!
ReplyDeleteI made a few quilt tops and put them away for quilting later - later being 4-5 years still waiting to quilt. Gave them to a blogger who would size them down to make lap quilts for nursing home patients. I have also collected sample blocks I've made and put them together for small quilts - with a new grandson you can never have too many quilts for floor play.

Love those totes especially! Great Lemonade indeed! Since I recently won another giveaway, don't enter me in this one, though some lucky person is going to receive a super package!
ReplyDeleteLemonade from lemons - I bought some blocks of of ebay that someone else made and not very well. I took the blocks and fixed them up a little, added sashing, borders and quilted the heck out of it to make a charity quilt. I liked it, but when I posted it, I found out friends and family loved it. Some even wondered why I gave it to charity.
ReplyDeleteI did a jelly roll quilt from a Tuesday Morning jelly roll and live it. It, too, was in the aqua and lime greens but not the same fabrics as yours. Let's see...lemons? I like to frame bits of quilts that are too badly damaged to repair.
ReplyDeleteSome years ago I was in an online rail fence block exchange and ended up with a hoard of blocks that didn't blend well together and were a variety of sizes (not all 6.5 in) and quality materials. I recently discovered this hoard of blocks and decided to make coin quilts with them. So I cut up additional 2.5 in strips to enrich the blocks I had, added colorful sashing and made three scrap quilts for my donation pile. One of these quilt tops I used to make a new face for a 20+ year old tumbling block quilt I had that was coming undone from wear. Some I enjoyed my "new" lemonade over and over again.

I bought fabric online to make a quilt for a relative. When it arrived, I discovered I hated it. I used some to make pincushions for a quilt guild event, and the rest went into a quilt for charity which I hope someone else will love.
ReplyDeleteI love your bags. So wonderfully colourful! I too love navy and lime together. I do shy away from bold fabric though. I don't know why since I always appreciate it when others use such fabrics in their projects.
ReplyDeleteI use to put all my binding leftovers in the bin for string blocks. I saw a quilt made with such leftover bindings strings and now, I'm thinking I can do that too. Fabric that are old or "what was I thinking when I bought that" kind of fabric go for the backing of placemats. I also try to "hide" little pieces of them in my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilt, whenever I can. Thank you for the chance to win. Glad to hear you are feeling better! ;^)

I love your summery tote! My granddaughter and I had a tie dye party to make tee-shirts. I used the leftover dye to dye some old cotton prints that I no longer liked (light calicos from the 90's). I loved some of the results. I think deep purple dye can improve almost anything! I used some in an art quilt and also made some luscious pouches.
ReplyDeleteLemonade from lemons - I had a very stained duvet cover (just the top) so I ripped it apart and from teh clean back I made a bag lining and still have lots of fabric left over to back a smal baby quilt!
ReplyDeleteI bought some fabric and completed squares from a person moving and not wanting to take it with her. I cannot imagine NOT packing my fabric. Anyway her completed blocks were turned into some smaller sized pet quilts.
ReplyDeleteOh man, I wish I could make cute bags like that! Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI love your ideas for the jelly roll race quilt top! I have a stack of orphan blocks -- test blocks, blocks that didn't turn out as hoped, extra blocks, etc. -- that I turn into pot holders. If the blocks are too large for pot holders I incorporate them into pieced backings. I end up with more pot holders than one person can use so I give them away -- to family, friends, girls at the bank or the doctor's office -- and everyone seems to love them.

ReplyDeletei'm making a quilt out of orphan blocks, small pieces of fabric and other stuff that is in my scrap pile. Also adding in some selvedges. Lots of lemons can become something of beauty.

Sometimes I make mug rugs from quilt blocks and scraps!
ReplyDeleteI now have accumulated scraps. I made some key fobs and coasters and nametags using very small scraps. I really love the bags you have made. Thanks for a chance to win a mystery box. My email is ajereena@hotmail.com
ReplyDeletelemon blocks - instead of doing a whole quilt with blocks that I ended up hating I turned it into a much smaller quilt top and then donated the top and left over fabric to a friend that was making quilts for a mission - what she finished turned out even more different and very nice man quilt.
ReplyDeleteI did a jelly roll race once and didn't like the quilt either. So I cut it into large squares then cut the squares on the diagonals to get four triangles. I sewed these back together and ended up with more interesting squares. I use these for my FMQ practice. When they are all quilted I plan to make a QAYG quilt from them.
ReplyDeleteI took cat fabric that was given to me (I dislike cats and it sat as a UFO for a year!) and finally finished a quilt for my bestie - she LOVED it! lorijane2004@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI started a vortex quilt I saw on Crazy Mom Quilts and used a lot of "ugly" fabric. It's beautiful so far. There's always room for the wallflowers! velelaw@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteMost quilters make a lemon now and then and I an no exception. I cut up an entire dark top(Oh my, did that process hurt but I got over it)and lamented the hours of work that went into it but I mostly thought about the money I had spent. My grands love the new pencil cases and gym bags and backpacks that was once that quilt top. My parents lived through the Depression so I learned to make do and use what I had on hand. My own school bags were plain denim but my 8 Grands love the new ones, all ready and waiting for school to start again. Ah, lemonade!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant idea! I participated in a sew along last year and realized pretty early on that it wasn't going to be my "cup of tea". I made what I had sewn into a table runner that I will donate to our guilds small quilt auction at our next show.

I buy a lot of fabric on eBay, and sometimes what actually shows up is...uh, lemons. Weird, one-off strangely patterned fabrics. Not everything looks the same in person as it does in an eBay listing!
ReplyDeleteI had received some strange splotchy teal/burgundy/gold/barf colored fabrics and sort of resigned myself to never finding a use for them. Oh well.
Fast forward about a year. A member of my extended family was in a terrible, terrible accident at work and suffered skull and brain injuries. I knew I wanted to make him a cheerful quilt and had some great beer-themed fabrics. What red-blooded, deer-hunting, football playing guy wouldn't want a beer quilt?? Turns out the very cute, fun beer fabrics were in...you guessed it: teal, burgundy, and gold (no barf) colors! That weird fabric was perfect to use as backing for the beer quilt and he LOVES it.
I'm happy to say the real lemonade in this story is that my step cousin is recovering quite well!
I picked up a skirt for myself in a thrift shop recently because I loved the fabric. It sat in my laundry room for months and finally realized it was really too short for my (aging) legs and honestly, probably too young a style for me, too. Hard realities :). But I really loved the fabric! So I ended up partially deconstructing it and with the addition of some coordinating fabric from my stash, turned it into a cute sundress for my 7 year old granddaughter. Then what to do for her sister? Another skirt that I was going to redo for myself became another sundress for her twin. I spent more time with all the deconstructing that I would have making two dresses from scratch, but it was satisfying to turn bad thrift shop choices into something cute for the little girls!

I am making coasters and baby quilts from the many crumb blocks that I have on hand. I started making crumb blocks (as leader and enders) many years ago in the 4 1/2" size.
ReplyDeletebgk44@ msn. com
I am not sure if this counts... I started making a purse but it wasn't going quite right so I turned it into a tote bag.. a project in the works as we..type.. ;)
ReplyDeleteI just love your little totes, adorable!
I have tons of "lemons" as I am mainly a remnant quilter from thrift shop found fabric.
